SHADE PERENNIALS

BARRENWORT (Epimedium) Black Sea. Part to full shade. Grows 12-18″ tall & 18″ wide. OUTSTANDING PLANT FOR DRY SHADE. Unique plant with leave become near black in fall.  Pretty delicate flowers in spring. Clumping habit spreads to about 3′ in  5 years in the right conditions. Tolerates wide range of soils.  Tough plant and needs minimal care once established. Do water if very dry in summer. Cut back foliage in late winter. If  leaves look good, leave them. Plant with hostas, ferns, tricyrtis, Chinese Wild ginger & pulmonaria (lungwort).  Mass plant, edge shady paths, fillers under trees. Deer resistant. 

CHINESE WILD GINGER (Asarum splendens) Part to full shade. Groundcover grows 6-18″ tall & 8-12″ wide. Beautiful arrow shaped variegated foliage. Spread slowly via creeping rhizomes. Not edible. Small purple/brown flowers in late spring. Semi evergreen in mild winters. Slightlyl acidic soil, moist but well drained. Creates dense mat of foliage. Low maintenance. Foliage can be pruned in spring. Pretty with heuchera (coral bells), hosta, ferns, sweet Woodruff (gallium), Dicentra (bleeding hearts), Astilbe & Hostas. Great in containers as well as shade gardens. Deer resistant. 

COLUMBINES (Aquilegia) Biedermeier, Swan Blue & White, Winky Purple & White PART SHADE – NEEDS 4-6 HOURS OF SUN. Ideally, protect from hot afternoon sun. Flowers to varying height depending ng on variety. Remove flowering stems after blooms to encourage more flowers. can be grown in full sun but light shade encourages more flowering. Keep soil regularly moist after flowering. Cut foliage to the ground once its declined in mid summer. Cut back again in fall. Doesn’t like to be moved or divided once established. POLLINATOR PLANT attracts hummingbirds. Use in borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, open shade gardens, woodland gardens. Looks great with lupins, iris, dicentra, hosta.

CORYDALIS (Corydalis) Blackberry Wine Part to full shade. Grows 10-12″ tall & 12-24″ wide. Fragrant flowers spring & summer. If cut back after bloom, may flower again sporadically in fall. moise but well drained soil. EXCELLENT COLOR FOR SHADY GARDENS. Containers, hanging baskets, rock gardens, shady cottage gardens,  

FERN – DYCE’S HOLLY FERN (Polystichum dycei) Part to full shade. Grows to 48″ tall & 24″ wide. Very handsome evergreen fern with dark green fronds emerging from a central crown. Excellent foliage plant for shade gardens. Gives winter interest. Looks great with Heuchera (Coral Bells), Astilbe, Lungwort, Dicentra (Bleeding Heart). Deer resistant.

FERN – AUTUMN FERN Brilliance (Dryopteris erythrosora) Part to full shade. Grows to 30″ tall & 18″ wide. Very easy to grow. Can tolerate some morning sun. New fronds unfurl bronze orange. Looks stunning against darker more mature foliage. Spreads by underground stems. Drought resistant once established. Brighen a shady area! Looks great with Liriope, hostas, heucheras (coral bells), corydalis. A very popular garden plant. Deer resistant. 

FERN – ALEUTIAN MAIDENHAIR (Adiantum aleuticum) Part of full sun. Grows to 3′ tall & wide. Very pretty with dark stems. 

FOAM FLOWER (Tiarella) Oakleaf PART SHADE TO SUN. Grows to 12″ & wide. Bright foliage with spires of white flowers in spring. Soil must be kept regularly moist but not sautrated. Looks great when mass planted. Leaves turn reddish in fall. Divide clumps every 2-3 years in early spring. Looks great with cimicifuga, hostas, heucheras. Deer resistant.

HOSTA – PAUL’S GLORY  Grows to 25″ tall & 55″ wide. Partial shade. Protect from afternoon sun. Blue/dark green edge with chartreuse center. Use Deer Scram. 

HOSTA – PATRIOT Grows 15-18″ tall & 30″ wide. Dark green leaf centers with white margin. 

LUNGWORT, Raspberry Splash, Silver Bouquet (Pulmonaria) Part to full shade.  Grows 12″ tall & 18″ wide. Has clusters of bright raspberry-pink flower in spring. Great silver foliage. Do best in highly organic moist soil. Water in dry spells to maintain foliage. Dry conditions lead to powdery mildew. Pollinator plant attracts hummingbirds & bees. Excellent flowering perennial for shade garden. Looks great with ferns hostas, brunneras, astilbe, dicentra. Use in containers. In the garden as edging, borders, cut flowers, mass plant. Deer resistant.

SWEET WOODRUFF (Gallium) Part to full shade. Very pretty mat forming ground cover. Grows to 10″ tall & 12-18″ wide. Bright green leaves brighten a shade garden. Leaves are fragrant when crushed or cut. Clusters of tiny star shaped white flowers April & May.  Use as groundcover, edge pathways, rock gardens, underplant larger shrubs.

AZALEAS & RHODODENDRONS

Azaleas & Rhododendrons are not deer resistant. Use deer scram. Great plant companions are Coral Bells (Heuchera), Bleeding Hearts (Dicentra) & Astilbe. These are good shade tolerant, deer resistant perennials to put in front of azaleas. 

Azalea Rebloooming – Encore Autumn Fire, Autumn Rouge, Autumn Sunset. Bloom-A-Thon Hot Pink. Blooms multiple times a year. Evergreen.

Azalea Silver Sword variegated foliage with pink flower; Haps Pink, Pleasant White. Deciduous. 

Rhododendrons – Nova Zembla. Grows 5′ tall & wide. Bright red fuchsia colored flowers. Evergreen

Rhododendrons – Roseum Elegance. Grows 6-8′ tall & wide. Rose lilac colored flowers. Evergreen.


CONIFERS

Arborvitae – Green Giant  (Thuja picata ‘Green Giant’) Fast growing evergreen privacy screen to 30-40 ft tall. Grows 3-5 feet in a year. Uniform shape and height. Block out neighbors in a year! Plant one every 5-6 feet to create a dense screen. Drought and disease tolerant. Best in full sun, will take a little shade. Trim to desired height.  Tough tree, Will survive most winter weather. Deer resistant. 

Arborvitae  – Emerald Green (Thuja picata ‘Emerald Green’)  Narrower than Green Giant. Grows to 15’ft tall & 4′ wide. Different look to Green Giants. Not deer resistant.

Cedar – Horstmann Blue Atlas  (Cedrus atlantica ‘Horstmann’) Semi dwarf. Architectural outline. Excellent speciman tree.

Cedar – Weeping Blue Atlas  (Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca Pendula’) 

Cedar – Miles High Deodar  (Cedrus deodara ‘Miles High’) Pendulous branches hang from upright narrow tree. Dark green foliage. Beautiful speciman. 

Cedar – Weeping Blue Lebanon  (Cedrus libani ‘Pendula’) Upright leader with graceful long, pendulous branches covered with long, stiff, blue green needles. 

Dwarf Golden Threadleaf Cypress (Chamaecyparis filifera ‘Aurea Nana’)  Noted for its drooping striking yellow foliage that provides year round interest. Evergreen shrub. Slow growing – will reach 6-7’ tall in 20 years. Full sun to part shade. Dislikes poorly drained soil. Rarely needs pruning. Grow in a container or in the garden as a feature plant or in rock gardens.  Deer resistant and drought resistant once established. 

Dwarf Howell’s Tigertail Spruce (Picea bicolor ‘Howells Dwarf Tigertail’) Highly ornamental cones. Green foliage with blue undersides. Keep color all winter.  Deer resistant

Dwarf Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria ‘Globosa Nana ) One of our favorite small evergreens! Very pretty with fine foliage and a super dome shape that requires little attention to keep looking good! Foliage turns rusty red in winter. Full to part sun. Slow grower reaching 3 ft tall & wide. Plant in a container, mass them, line your pathway or plant singly for impact. This plant will add year round color to your garden. 

Dwarf Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris ‘Glauca Nana’)

Eunonymous Silver King Grows 6′ tall & 3′ wide. Variegated foliage. Fast grower. Drought tolerant when established. 

Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) 

Hinoki Cypress Fernspray Gold (Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray Gold’) Grows to 12′ tall & 8′ ft wide at 6-10″ per year. Plenty of sun and watering gives best gold foliage. May need to water more than once weekly in hot summers.

Japanese Umbrella Pine (Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera – Compacta”)

Juniper – Hetzi Column Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Hetzi Columnaris’) 

Leyland Cypress – Fast growing to 3 ft in 1 year. Grows to 20-30 ft in 10 years. Excellent quick solution privacy tree.  Evergreen.  Once established tolerates mild droughts. Use Deer Scram. 2 different sizes – 15gal (6′ tall) & 25gal (1o’ tall). 

Pine – Obelisk Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra ‘Obelisk’) Grows to 7′. Narrow upright tree. Good vertcial accent. Evergreen. Tolerates coastal conditions. 

Pine – Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora ‘Glauca’) Grows to 8-12′ in 10 years. Full sun. Dense conical shape with blue green twisted needles. 

Pine – Japanese Black Pine ‘Thunderhead’ (Pinus thunbergii ‘Thunderhead’) 


DECIDUOUS 

Albizia julibrissin ‘Summer Chocolate’ – Fast growing. Deciduous. Leaves emerge green then turn burgundy. Pink pincushion flowers late summer. 

Barberry, Orange Rocket (Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’) Grows to 6ft tall & 3′ wide. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. 

Birch – Whitebarked Himalayan (Betula jacquemontii) Brightest white of all birches. Bright yellow fall foliage. 

Birch – Heritage River (Betula nigra ‘Heritage’) Beautiful Native tree prized for its stunning peeling bark. Vigorous, fast growing to 40-60 ft tall & wide. Full sun to part shade. Highly resistant to diseases & insects. Highly tolerant of a wide range of soils including mild drought once established. Does best in moist, slightly acidic soils. Mulch around roots and use soaker hose to ensure adequate moisture during establishment. Ideal tree for problem wet areas. Low maintenance and needs little pruning. Deer resistant & bird friendly

Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) One of the showiest flowering shrubs for the dappled shade garden. Dense, mounding form with large leaves. Excellent foundation shrub or massed under trees. Flowers give way to glossy, inedible nuts (buckeyes). Yellow fall foliage. Deciduous. 8-12 ft. tall, 12-15 ft. wide. Attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Easy care. Native. Thrives in enriched, evenly moist, well-drained soils.  Deer resistant.

Dogwood – Celestial White Dogwood (Cornus ‘Rutdan’) – white flowers. Bird attracting

Dogwood – Cherokee Brave  (Cornus florida)- pink to white flowers. Bird attracting 

Dogwood – Cherokee Princess (Cornus florida) White Flowering. Bird attracting 

European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) Deciduous. 

European Hornbeam (Carpinus betula ‘Fastigiata’) Attractive, densely branched, narrow tree when young. Ages to broad cone shape. Symmetrical, formal appearance. Dark green foliage turns yellow-orange in fall. Plant in groups as a screen or windbreak, or as specimen shade tree in narrow yard. Takes well to hard pruning as a formal hedge. Deciduous. Favorite tree for European allees and pleached landscape designs. Moderately slow grower to 40 ft. tall & 30 ft. wide. Long lived.

Gingko bilboa ‘Saratoga’ – Slow-growing male tree that doesn’t produce messy fruit associated with other Gingko’s. Slow growing tree to 45 ft tall & 35 ft wide. Fan shaped green leaves turn stunning bright yellow & gold in fall – excellent fall foliage tree for larger gardens.  Tough deciduous tree, tolerates pollution & few known diseases or pests. Deer Resistant. Full sun.

Japanese Snowbell ‘Snowcone’ (Styrax japonicus ‘Snowcone’) Very pretty tree with white flowers from May to June.  Fragrant. Deciduous. Slow growing tree to 25ft tall. Multi stemmed tree with strongly horizontal side branches.The fruits are gray drupes displayed from late summer to late fall. Excellent yellow fall foliage. Full to part shade. Prune in winter to shape.

Japanese Snowbell Marley’s Pink (Styrax japonicus ‘Marley’s Pink’) – Heavy bloomer! Weeping pink blossoms in late spring to early summer. Fragrant. Grows Shades 8-10 ft & 4-5 ft wide. Dark green glossy leaves turn bright lemon yellow in fall. Good pest and disease resistance. Excellent as feature in garden or container. Full sun to part shade in consistantly moist soil. Top showy garden tree! Deer resistant. 

Hydrangea – Endless Summer – Original (blue grows 3-4′ tall and wide) & Blushing Bride (grows 3-6′ tall & wide. large white blooms – excellent cut flowers), Bloomstruck (grows 4’tall & 5′ wide. Part shade. Blooms late spring to fall. Large flower heads.  Depending on soil pH, you can have vivid rose-pink or purple hydrangea flower heads.)

Hydrangea – Little Lime (Panicle Hydrangea)  Bloom on new wood. grows 3-5’ tall and wide, lime flowers on strong stems. great in containers)

Hydrangea – Paris (grows to 2′. red flowers. blooms on old wood. doesn’t need pruning), Venice (grows to 3′ – doesn’t need pruning – big link summer flowers – change to blue with aluminium additive. Blooms on old wood), Vienna (grows to 3′ mophead blooms on old wood) 

Hydrangea – Lets Dance Blue Jangles (big leaf hydrangea grows to 2′ – blooms on old & new wood. large flowers turn deep blue in aicidic soils. doesn’t need pruning) 

Hydrangea – Tuff Stuff, Tuff Stuff Red (mountain hydrangeas – the hardiest of all. blooms summer through fall on old & new wood. grows to 3′)

Magnolia ‘Butterflies’ – Yellow flowers in spring. Deer resistant. 

Maple – Autumn Blaze Maple (Acer x freemanii ‘Jeffsred’) Fast growing to 50′ tall. Brilliant, long lasting, orange-red fall color. Native. Bird friendly. 

Maple – Monroe Vine Maple (Acer circinatum ‘Monroe’) Grows 6-10′ tall & wide. Slow grower. Part shade. Smaller variety of native species. Nice open branching structure. Lacy deep green leaves are often tinged bronze. Bold yellow fall color. Native.

Maple – Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum) Exfoliating cinammon colored bark. Soft green leaves turn scarlet in fall. Grows to 25′ tall & 15′ wide. Year round interest. 

Maple – October Glory Red Maple (Acer rubrum)Fast growing to 50′ tall. Outstanding, reliable, bright orange to deep, reddish purple fall color. Native tree. Bird friendly. 

Redbud – Traveller Weeping Redbud (Cercis ‘Traveller’)Grows to 5′ tall & 5′-12′ wide. Sun to part shade. Bright rosy-pink flowers appear in early spring before the foliage emerges.Perfect for smaller gardens or as an accent plant. Attracts butterflies. Bird friendly. Deer Resistant

Redbud – Oklahoma (Cercis canadensis var. texensis ‘Oklahoma’). Attracts butterflies. Bird friendly. 

Redbud – Rising Sun (Cercis canadensis ) Attracts butterflies. Bird friendly. Americna Native.

Spirea – Double Play Artisan (Spiraea japonica) Grows to 2.5′ tall & wide. Red new growth in spring is followed by fuschia summer flowers. Compact mound. Deer resistant. Very low maintenance.

Spirea – Gold Thread (Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’) Spring white flowers appear then chartreuse, willow-like leaves. Holds its color throughout the summer and turns a coral-orange in the fall. Carefree, vigorous grower to 3 – 4 ft tall & wide. Attracts butterflies. Deciduous. Full sun to part shade. Deer Resistant

Spirea – Anthony Waterer Red (S. x bumalda ‘Anthony Waterer’) Grows 3-4′ tall & 4-5′ wide. Rosy blossoms all summer and into fall. Sun. Compact habit needs little maintenance. 

Viburnum – Popcorn Doublefile (Viburnum plicatum  ‘Popcorn’) Grows to 8′ tall & 7′ wide. Looks great mass planted. White spring flowers. Fall foliage change. Drought tolerant once established.

Willow Dappled / Tricolor (Salix integra ‘Hakura Nishiki’)  Very pretty fast growing shrub with unique semi-weeping shape. White, green pink foliage, catkins from spring to fall and bright colored stems provide year round interest. New foliage is very pretty. Prune lightly during growing season to encourage new growth. Prune to shape in winter. Grows to 15 feet but maintain to 6-10 ft with pruning. Thrives in wet locations. Full to part sun. Use Deer Scram.

Witch Hazel Arnold Promise (Hamamelis ‘Arnold Promise’) Stunning late winter to early spring yellow blooms. Full sun. Deciduous. Moderate grower to 20ft tall. Fragrant. Plant near entranceways or your patio to enjoy the flower show and lovely fragrance! Full sun to dappled shade. Deer don’t tend to bother witch hazels. Apply Deer Scram to be sure. 

Wisteria Japanese ‘White Blue Eyes’ ( Wisteria floribunda) Japanese wisteria growing to 20 feet. Long racemes of white flowers with blue eyes in Spring. Full sun with well drained soil. Grow on pergola, fences, trellis, gazebo. Deciduous. To encourage best blooms avoid high nitrogen fertiliser. Deer Resistant. 


EVERGREENS

Acuba ‘Gold Dust’  Slow grower to 4 to 6 ft. tall & wide. Striking gold variegated shrub for shade gardens. Beautiful bright green foliage heavily speckled with gold. Plants may be male or female; females may produces berries if a male pollenizer is planted nearby. Evergreen shrub.Good for coastal gardens. We find deer tend to leave Acuba alone, but use Deer Scram to be sure.

Boxwood – Variegated Boxwood. Brightens up a shady spot. Easy to prune. Good for containers. Deer resistant

Boxwood – Dwarf English Boxwood. Deer resistant

Boxwood – Green Velvet, Baby Gem & Winter Gem.

Fragrant Sweet Box (Sarcococca ruscifolia) Grows 3-5′ tall & wide. Slow grower. Great for shade gardens. Fragrant white spring flowers. Prune to shape after flowering. Deer resistant.

Goshiki False Holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’) New leaves start red then turn green with variegations of creamy white, gray-green, and yellow-green. Excellent accent or hedge.
